In an Emergency

Pipeline incidents are rare, but they can occur. The crude oil transported by Portland-Montreal Pipe Line is flammable and potentially explosive under certain conditions.

In the event of an emergency involving Portland-Montreal Pipe Line you should ensure your personal safety and that of others around you. Immediately do the following:

  • Leave the area and call 911 or your local Emergency Number
  • Call Portland-Montreal Pipe Line collect at 207-767-3231 in the US or 514-645-4589 in Canada (24 hours a day) and give a location of the problem
  • Remain upwind at a safe distance and minimize the fire potential by keeping ignition sources away. Warn others.

What Not to Do

  • To minimize fire potential, do not light a match, start an engine, use a telephone or camera or do anything that will create a spark.
  • To minimize personal exposure, do not enter the area or touch or breathe the liquid.
  • Do not hinder containment, repair or clean up activities

Signs of a Pipeline Product Release

  • Sight - A mist, white cloud or accumulation of petroleum on the ground. Dying vegetation on a green corridor.
  • Sound - An unusual noise, like a hissing or roaring sound.
  • Smell - A characteristic petroleum odor.

Portland-Montreal Pipe Line will work with local emergency management officials to resolve the problem.
